Post A Week 2011

One of my goals for 2011 is to write 100 words each day. The purpose of that goal is to get me in the writing habit. When I set that goal, I truly meant 100 words each day, not writing 300 words one day and 400 words another day to total 700 words in one week. The point is to get into the habit of writing every day.

The WordPress challenges – Post a Day and Post a Week – are a perfect way for me to build a blogging habit. I’ve signed up for the Post a Week challenge, which means that I will post at least once a week to this blog.

It won’t be easy. Even writing this short post wasn’t easy because I was worried about flow and format, punctuation and grammar. But I’m up to the challenge and I hope that at the end of the year, this blog will have at least 52 posts, one for each week of the year.

Mutter, mumble, and muse on!

Let’s Start at the Very Beginning

Greetings!

I’m not really going to start at the very beginning because no one is really interested in that. I just thought that before my first meat-and-potatoes post I should write something about this blog and myself.

I’ve had a couple of blogs in the past but those blogs were private and more like journals instead of blogs. And they both went away when the company that was hosting them decided that blogs were not a part of their core business. Which they weren’t. That’s why I’ve been hesitant to start a real blog – (1) because I was afraid that the blog would take the place of my journal, which I love, and (2) because I wanted to be sure that if I started a real blog, it would stick around for a while.

There are other reasons why I’ve hesitated about starting a blog: What will I write about? Will I care if no one reads it? Who wants to read what I have to say? What makes me qualified to write about anything at all?

But I finally made a decision. Who cares about any of that? Life is too short to wait for the perfect time, the perfect blog title, the perfect list of blog topics to write about for a year, etc. And so I signed up for a blog.

I chose “Mutterings, Mumblings, and Musings” for the title of the blog because that’s what I’m going to be doing here. Right now I don’t have a specific focus but perhaps after a year of doing this, I’ll have found a niche and then will focus on that. I don’t think I have a particular expertise but I have read a lot of books, magazines, and blog posts and I do have a lot of life, work, and travel experience that I want to share.

I think I’ll be writing a lot about fitness, particularly running. I’m not a personal trainer. I’m not a fast runner, either. I’m a back-of-the-middle-of-the-pack runner. But I enjoy running. I enjoy running in races (note I didn’t say “competing”). I enjoy planning out a training schedule.

I’ll be writing about etiquette because I think society today is lacking in etiquette and common courtesy, financial topics because I think that too many of the articles out there are either too simple or too complicated, and motivational/self-improvement topics because I think that writing about them will help me.

Welcome to my writing desk.
