I managed to run a bit during the Thanksgiving break. Since I didn’t have to work, I managed to run outside a lot. Since I don’t listen to music when I’m running outside (only when I’m in a race!), my thoughts were darting here, there, and everywhere. Here are the ones I remembered when I got back home:

  • Why must we edit classics like ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas or It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown so that they are politically correct? Are we really being sensitive and inclusive by doing this? Or are we simply re-writing history a la Orwell’s 1984?
1984 was not supposed to be an instruction manual
  • Why do people blow their noses at the table? Don’t they realize that it’s gross and disgusting to people who are eating?
Oh, that’s nasty…
  • Why are minority groups allowed to use racial slurs on one another but if another racial group uses the same word, it’s bad?
Shhh…don’t say anything
  • Why do dictionaries define words using the root word itself? Example: discretionary – subject or left to one’s own discretion (dictionary.com) At least the website gives a clickable link to “discretion” but would it really kill the writers to define discretionary as “subject or left to one’s own freedom of judgment or choice”?

  • Why do people tell you that you look great when you know you look like a sausage?

More random thoughts while pounding out the miles both on the road and on my trusty treadmill:

  • Why did everyone swoon over Han Solo instead of Luke Skywalker?

    Who would you choose?
  • Why do people put their mobiles on speaker and then hold the phone up next to their mouths? Do they think that speakerphone is the same thing as “hands free”?

  • Why do people treat public toilets like pigsties? Would you walk away from an unflushed toilet in your home or at your office? I think people just get gross in public areas. I always try to leave a public restroom better than when I came in, which usually means taking an extra paper towel and wiping up the area around the sink. It’s a small gesture but I think it helps and it makes me feel good.

  • Why are there always a few who need to unbuckle their seatbelts on the plane before the “fasten seatbelt” sign is turned off? Do you really feel constricted by that little belt? So much so that you couldn’t bear another 30 seconds of wearing it?
No Smoking and Fasten Seatbelt Signs
  • Why do people wear sunglasses indoors? Do they think they really look that cool? I think they look silly, not cool.

Simple Goal for the Big Sur Half-Marathon

My pyramid of Big Sur Half-Marathon finisher’s medals is missing its top!

9 years, 9 finisher’s medals ~ Big Sur Half-Marathon

With any luck and barring any injury between now and Sunday, 18 November 2012, I will be able to add the 10th Big Sur Half-Marathon finisher’s medal to the pyramid.

I have no time goal for this race – I just want to finish and complete my pyramid.

Happy Running!
